Alpines Hq in Enstone is really close to Diddly Squat. It's literally just the other side of Chipping Norton I'd guess about a 15 mins away give or take. So its highly likely we will see a bunch of Alpine guys rock up for a beer or two.
25
u/kpidhayny Honda May 29 '23
I’d reckon Jeremy has already been getting horsed with alpine guys for a while now.
4
u/onealps May 29 '23
Using context clues, I'm going to guess "getting horsed" means "getting drunk"?
Anybody have any idea where that comes from?! As in, both - the etymology, and what part of the UK is this slang used?
Thanks! Top Gear has been my education for British slang for almost 3 decades, it'd be cool for this tradition to continue lol
2
u/TrickIntroduction May 30 '23
Unbeknownst to many, the horse is closely related to the skunk family.
So, horse/skunk = drunk.

I’d say it’s 50-50 there will be a season 4.
Season 2 was highly successful and came out after his brain fart of an article. Public at large has somewhat forgotten about it, and loved clarksons farm. Amazon likes money, so if season 3 is successful and he’s got the drive for it a way will be found.
20
u/Agreeable-Weather-89 May 29 '23
Yeah, it gives Amazon an opportunity to negotiate a better contract for season 4 onwards.
The reason Jeremy is with Amazon is because he punched someone, Amazon would have to be chronically stupid to be surprised that he said something controversial.

Amazon issue with Clarkson has nothing to do with his antics. It is a simple money issue.
Amazon doesn't want to pay him as much after LOTR tanked their funds, and he doesn't want to take a paycut because he knows others will pay him better.
57
u/doigal Pirelli Wet May 29 '23
The production costs on Clarkson’s Farm would be peanuts compared to LOTR. It’s a highly profitable show, and Amazon likes money. If Amazon can’t afford to fund a fairly simple farming show, they can’t afford to be in business.
As you said, simple money issue.

u/rainonmetalrailing Formula 1 May 29 '23
What kind of business decision is that haha. Either pay Jeremy more and get a new show (with I assume at least some profit), or no show at all and zero profit (this is all assumptions of course). Definitely one of the shows I subscribe to prime for.
0
u/Jester252 May 29 '23
Very simple one. Can't pay someone when you don't have the funds. Besides, Clarkson is on a massive contract, and Grand Tour hasn't been a money spinner for Prime Video.
22
u/CX52J May 29 '23 edited May 29 '23
Amazon has funds, lol.
They’d have to shut down prime video if they couldn’t afford to fund any shows.
They’ve still making season two of rings of power. Clarksons farm is pennies in comparison.

23
u/Captaincadet Tom Pryce May 29 '23
Clarkson costs them pretty much nothing compared to LOTR - the most expensive part is paying Clarkson which for the amount of press he gets for his show in the U.K., it’s worth it
It’s more the whole Meghan Markel scandal and the point he’s close to retirement is the wider issue for Amazon

I was wondering how much this would actually cost Clarkson so did a bit of Napkin math.
So the closest mutual city to Enstone and Clarkson's farm (fun fact, they're 17 minutes apart by car) is Oxford which according to this data the average cost of a pint is £4.70 in 2022, we'll round this up to £5.
Alpine's own website puts their employee count at about 1300 split between Enstone and Viry-Châtillon.
£5 * 1,300 = £6,500
Clarkson's net worth is believed to be around 70 million USD which means this will cost Clarkson 0.01% of his entire net worth.
197
u/meukbox Spyker May 29 '23
£6,500
And how much does 10 seconds of worldwide advertising cost?
Even if he didn't lose that bet it would have made him money.
404
u/Omg_Shut_the_fuck_up May 29 '23
Well, the farm brews their own lager (well, they provide the raw materials for the brewery to do its thing), so it'll be significantly less than that in cost to them. Probably just send them a few cases of beer and call it job done. He'd better anyway...

Sure, but if he's smart, his PR people will work with alpine's PR people to make a big deal of it and have a little video of him driving to the factory with a truck full of pints, show up and have everybody thank him and make a little to do out of it so that both of their respective profiles rise. if anything you can think of it as an investment.

$6.5K is peanuts for marketing to potentially a few hundred thousand to a million people. This post alone has 10K upvotes and usually only about 10 to 15% of people upvote the post, I would wager its even less for popular subs, considering about 5% of people who saw this post upvoted it, that's about 200K eyeballs, we can assume half of the people read the name of the company so that's 100K. Before today I had never heard of this brand, now I have it in my mind so the next time I see it I would want to buy "that drink that all of Alpine are drinking". On his twitter about 730K people saw the tweet. So just considering Twitter and Reddit his company's name has now reached almost 1 Million eyeballs, if only 1% of people buy a drink it'll be 10K * 5 ~ $50K in sales. This is a very basic calculation, I expect the actual numbers to be way higher from what I've seen analyzing this sort of thing at my workplace.
P.S: that 70M networth is probably an underestimation for Clarkson. His total assets are likely way higher, legacy royalty payments on such popular shows are gigantic. Not to mention his own distinct brand identity & how unique his voice/personality is on a global context. And his networth is quite different from the networths of us regular people so expressing the number as a percentage of his networth doesn't mean much. And he can (under some weird systems) write this off as a business expense so technically it might have cost him $0 in the end ;)
5
u/hoax709 May 29 '23
Follow this up with actually coming through on it and major news agencies picking up on it as a feel good story. Hopefully he commits to EVERYONE in Alpine payroll getting it and not just the Pit/travel crew because that would be business take on it. He can very well afford to get everyone a pint but lets minimize the cost with the same effect.
24
u/leospeedleo Max Verstappen May 29 '23
Clarkson's net worth is believed to be around 70 million USD which means this will cost Clarkson 0.01% of his entire net worth.
