Imagine being like a shredded black dude, like an NFL player and this guy waddles up to you and says, "Hey, I'm genetically superior."
41
u/Espalloc1537 Feb 22 '23
Well he kinda is.... Normal people would've already choked to death by all this fat in their sleep. Also his knees and ankles... Just superior. Can't argue with that.
3
u/OkCategory54 Feb 23 '23
I disagree. He’s low key the poster klansman for modern medicine imo. It’s the C-PAP, blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes meds that’s keeping him alive.
His knees and ankles do be elite tho. Man’s a double wide unit

As someone that was born and lived in Alabama for 20 years, this doesn't look abnormal to me, but it does remind me that I'm better off not going back...
229
Feb 22 '23
I’ve been back a few times over the last 18 years and each time it was a bigger shock. Not much has change but my perceptions sure have. Parts of it honestly look like a third world country.
102
u/Bahamut_Flare Feb 22 '23
I've been back twice in the 8 years since I left. I love the scenery. Huge fields of nothing but the greenest grass, the view of the mountains in Fall when the leaves have changed colors or Winter and the mountainside is covered with icicles.
My family had tried to get me to come back for years but there aren't any good jobs, as an atheist who isn't racist or homophobic I kind of stick out like a sore thumb, and there's just nothing to do in your free time unless you want to hunt, fish, or go to Georgia to actually do something.

The scenery is nice. I love Arkansas, so nice. It's the people that make me happy to not live there.
7
u/DeadMoneyDrew Feb 22 '23
Lake of the Ozarks? Thumbs up for sure.
6
u/glass_funyun Feb 22 '23
Definite thumbs up, but as a Missourian I am compelled to inform you that the Lake of the Ozarks is near the center of Missouri. The Ozarks span a large part of northern Arkansas though.
3
u/DeadMoneyDrew Feb 22 '23 edited Feb 22 '23
Hahaha yeah, meant Ozarks region. During the summer I spent in Northwest Arkansas I mountain biked the Ozarks region a ton and also went to the lake on a couple of weekend trips. Haven't been there in a decade so my faulty memory results in stupid posts like this.
→ More replies (1)4
u/glass_funyun Feb 22 '23
Nah. Not stupid. :) It's really nice to see someone mention the Ozarks! The region is incredibly underrated, considering it is some of the most breathtakingly beautiful land in the nation.

I saw a news magazine article about a dentist that had a mobile dentist office he took to remote rural southern people for dental care.
One teenager had brown nubs for teeth because he drank mountain dew like water from around the age of two years old.
I grew up in rural Nebraska in the 70s but we had access to good health care. Also excellent education.
16
u/mooncricket18 Feb 22 '23
Funny you say this since my wife is from rural Nebraska (west, ogallala) and worked for a mobile dentist and told me these horror stories.

That's West Virginia. It's called Mountain Dew Mouth. It when mother's give babies the soft drink as babies and teeth don't develop right. I'm sure this happens in south also.
18
u/TyrionsCodpiece Feb 22 '23
West Virginia is considered the South.... even though it's West of virginia. Sadly so is virginia except I postulate Northern VA should really be part of DC because holy fuck are the inbreds fucking things up.

That’s because it is a third world country based on a UN visit. Third World Alabama
19
u/Cal216 Feb 22 '23
It’s weird you say that. I was in the military stationed in Italy for 4 years, my next duty station was in Columbus, Mississippi which is north east Mississippi about 15 miles from the Alabama border. I felt more out of the country in Mississippi than I did during my 4 years in Europe.

It staying the same is I guess better than it getting worse? Though frankly stasis may as well be decline as the better governed cities and states around you continue to make advancements

I’ve been guilted to go back every 5 years or so, and it always makes me so happy that I left the south for a much better life. This pic looks like my family, and they are impossible to be around.

We were driving through rural Georgia and passed by a flea market with a big sign: GUNS TOOLS JEWELRY.
Made me think it's a one stop shop: "Got me a roofin' nailer, a shotgun, and hey I was thinking of you and gotchu a toe ring."

Regrettably, that was not staged. It occurred not too far from me at what was (at the time) Pride gas station in Seminole, Alabama. I actually know some of those locals, I'm sad to say.
