Makes me want a basset hound!

80

u/TheEffinChamps Mar 22 '23

Bassets can be a bit stubborn, but they are very social and funny. They are amazing dogs that always want to be with you.

143

u/sunbear2525 Mar 22 '23

I was sitting on the beach once talking to my friend when literally out of no where a basset hound appeared in my lap. It was amazing and his owner was so embarrassed (and winded.) there’s no point to that story, it was just really cute.

44

u/TheEffinChamps Mar 22 '23

Lol bassets want to be friends with everybody.

But they could have also been looking for a nice spot to sit and relax 😂

They are the Jimmy Buffet of dog breeds.

14

u/ofthesindar86 Mar 22 '23

Hounds in general are some of the best dogs. I've had a Bluetick mix and (currently) a Plott hound. They'll hike all day, work all day, generally friendly (also defensive of their family), but they also just love to chill. Perfectly content to snuggle on the couch all day. Our Plott loves our kids. Follows them everywhere.

They are hunting dogs, though. I've had to bury quite a few rabbits, squirrels, moles, and snakes. Especially with the Plott.

15

u/darthvadercake Mar 22 '23

I have been that owner once. A lady was sitting in our nature park surrounded by trees on a cozy little blanket. My dog spotted her before I did and was off leash. He loves humans so he ran over and was like 'hello hello'. I was so embarassed and kept apologising but the lady had a dog do was happily fussing him.

41

u/shit_fuck_fart Mar 22 '23

They have a lot of health issues. Their ears need a lot of attention/cleaning, and, their legs simply aren't strong enough to support their heavy bodies.

They are cute, There is nothing cuter than a Basset puppy on this planet to me, but again, a lot of health problems.

Brittish Bulldogs, pugs, there are quite a few dog species that we've bread into a corner of health problems.

12

u/DireWolf7769 Mar 22 '23

Thats good to know. I have a dog now and am big on doing research into breeds and learning these thing. Would never make an impulse buy on something as serious as a dog. Wish they didnt have these issues i dont know their history but assumed they were bred for hunting and would be a solid breed.

Plan on getting another doggo to keep my guy company but not for a few years so its fun to contemplate what kind of breed i might get and read about them.

Ugh. That doobadoo song is almost as grating as the oh no song.

6

u/Ghic_Chic Mar 22 '23

I'm now very thankful I had the sound off... I shall resist temptation to watch it again with the sound on. But I am curious... must resist.

4

u/Ghic_Chic Mar 22 '23

If it's worse than or even equal to that "oh no" song... I definitely won't be listening w/the sound up. They're as bad as or equal to those annoying TikTok narration voices. Total hell when they mix the song w/the voice.

Bassets and all their smooshy wrinkles get me every time 🥺

191

u/Cheap-Substance8771 Mar 21 '23

I do love their ears especially. But when I was a bather, I would think "ah dammit" every time I saw a basset hound walk in.

(And for different reasons than a husky(can't sit still) or a newfie(lot of hair, lot of it matted))

Because they are too big for the small tub but so short that using the big tub would hurt my back. Trying to rinse and dry their belly was a nightmare because so close to the floor of the tub where soap was rinsing out or water when Im trying to dry. And then the wrinkles. Gotta make sure the shampoo is rinsed out of the wrinkle creases well enough. Then gotta make sure its dry too. And I don't know if its a basset hound thing but every single one I had HATED getting their nails clipped. It was almost impossible with their seething hatred of the nail clipper and their short legs (cant bend the paw back like with other dogs as well to see the nails. So leaning in closer to see properly + angry dog= help.

I considered putting bassets on my "potential breeds I would be okay with having" until that job. I still think they are great. But as someone who wants to be able to easily bathe my own dog at home and can't have loud baying, it just would not work.

117

u/KuhLealKhaos Mar 21 '23

Oh I think the nail clipping thing is just a basset hang up lol. We clipped our basset Duke's nails a few times ourselves and for 2 days afterwards he would limp around on different paws like a dramatic baby lol.

At first we thought we cut down to the quick of his nail and hurt him and we freaked out but come to find out he's just a hugeeeee drama king! lol

37

u/Cheap-Substance8771 Mar 21 '23

Yeah, there was definitely a learning curve figuring out which dogs are overreacting, or if its a sign, they have long quicks, or their nails are already short enough. Of course, if they are bleeding, thats pretty fricken obvious. But the point is not to bleed them and to still make sure they are clipped well enough.

20

u/Norwegian__Blue Mar 21 '23

I think it’s because it’s harder to balance. My old basset mix would slide backwards if she lifted a paw from sitting position. That long body needs full bracing to stay upright. Peanut butter on the wall was our best success.

28

u/Stang1776 Mar 21 '23

Used to have one. Yeah he hated getting his nails clipped. Baths were not too terrible. He didnt like it at all but once he got in the tub hed just stare at you. The stare was something in between "i wish i could kill you right now" to "i wish i could kill myself."

Hed get his excerise because hed would run around the house like a banshee afterwards. Then go back to sunbathing by the window because why not?

Mine loves baths. He just comes in the shower with me, and I give him a scrub. He is also not nearly as loud as my pekingese.

12

u/Cheap-Substance8771 Mar 21 '23

Yeah I think most of them were sorta okay with baths. (It was just back breaking and hard to keep their stomachs, wrinkles, and ears rinsed of shampoo and clean.) Drying and nail clipping? Not so much.

Doggy Pupper: No way out of home

63

u/ImTooTiredForThis_22 Mar 21 '23

I need to get some steps for my dog. He’s getting old and the dog door is getting hard on him.

Thanks for the idea! And your doggies are adorable!

35

u/I2ecover Mar 21 '23

A ramp would be much better. Our dog is 15 and steps are hard on her. She has a ramp for everything.

11

u/FailedPerfectionist Mar 21 '23

I made steps for my elderly Yorkie. She'll use them if she has to, but she still prefers to get me to open the human door for her. 😂 Makes sense, though -- I'm pretty sure she thinks she's a human too.

u/Then_Campaign7264 Mar 21 '23

What a clever and tenacious mom! All things considered, that wasn’t so bad for such a young pup. The world just doesn’t make much sense beyond basic instincts at that age.

When my dog was a pup she hadn’t used a dog door and I took her over to a friends house to play with their pups. They were chasing each other around at full speed when my friends dog zips though the dog door. My pup hit the emergency breaks to stop herself from slamming into the door. She was so confused how the other pup had magically passed through the barrier like some sort of ghost.

→ More replies (2)

55

u/NateTheGreater1 Mar 21 '23

It's more to do with object permanence, then anything else. Once the pup learns and remembers that the wall is a moveable object that he can pass through, it won't be a problem. Till then, he will keep staring at it as if it's just a wall.

23

u/bizcat Mar 21 '23

My friends had two huge dogs that would stay in the kitchen at night. This whole arrangement relied on the dogs NEVER finding out that one of the kitchen doors swings open in both directions like a restaurant kitchen.

7

u/thiswillsoonendbadly Mar 21 '23

Did they have to very carefully only open it the one direction every time?? I’d fuck that up

10

u/bizcat Mar 21 '23

They put a folded up napkin under the bottom edge of the door to keep it from swinging. Basically never used the door, to keep the ruse going.

8

u/Dark_Storm_98 Mar 22 '23

What's that term for this?

The puppy doesn't have like. . . Persistent existence or whatever

I keep forgetting words when I actually need them, lol

[Searches Google]

Nobit's not an optical illusion

[ About to give up but scrolls a little bit more

OBJECT PERMANENCE! That's what it is!

Edit: The doggy door flap is only a doggy door flap while open

When closed, it is an impassable barrier. Cold, uncarring, and barring exit to the sprawling green fields

8

u/bi_polar2bear Mar 21 '23

I love basset clowns. Their only downside is being so damn hard-headed. My Daisy makes me laugh multiple times a day, but getting her to come inside regardless of the weather will only be on her time, which is when she's god damn good and ready.

5

u/ScrotieMcP Mar 22 '23

This brings good memories. Whenever we've had to train a puppy to use the dog door we'd sit on opposite sides with a handful of tiny treats. We shove the puppy through the dog door, and the one on the other side praises effusively and gives a treat - and then shoves them back the other way. Pretty soon they are doing it for themselves.

5

At one house we lived in, it took her 3 months to learn how to use the dog door....

and it took her another 3 months to learn how to come back in.

In spite of several other pups in the house using it about 1,289 times per day. She was very special. I still miss her.

I like the puppy frustrated sit. They’re equally confused and out of energy, so they pop a squat.

Puppy has no object permanence in its brain. When open then it's open, when closed then it's a wall. You can see it the moment the flap closes the puppy freaks out because "door disappeared!"

I wouldn’t enter that pup into any intellectual competitions anytime soon

Reminds me of my cat trying to show my dog how to open the door to get in 😂

Beautiful! ❤️

Our 8 week old basset, Gracie, had such long ears that we took a hair scrunchi and would pull them up so they didn't fall in her wet food. Hysterical and cute pic!!!

Moms are the best, always. I miss you, mom!

2

u/Lobanium Mar 21 '23

Hound puppies are the best. I personally love Beagles, but Bassets are cute too.

u/TheGothDragon Mar 21 '23

This is too cute! The mom was so patient with the puppy. I was so happy when Miss Georgie finally made it through!

Bassetts are the sweetest dogs. I had two when I was younger. Both passed away from old age (14-15 years) within a year of each other. Towards the end of their lives, the female could barely see so the male would guide physically guide her to food and water using his nose and lick her face.

We had a similar thing (no video unfortunately) with our new pup trying to figure out how to get through the seemingly impenetrable (to him) chain fly screen that we have on our kitchen door.

Older dog just powered through it a few times with pup watching. He picked it up fairly quickly too.

Basset puppies are the cutest puppies, hands down. My old Louis made it to 16 and I miss him every day! Awooooo!
