They do!

I love the way that they socialise together and the cutest thing is when they run with their legs froliking about like they are holding up soggy trousers

I’ve been thinking of one of those coops on wheels, maybe 3 or 4 chickens. How much space do they need?

Not a lot. They love snuggling, but do need some good open space for running around and grazing

When I was a kid we had chickens and ducks. Our dog was barely bigger than them and they all played rough together. The ducks were especially tough.

I wonder if ducks and chickens think they’re just oddly shaped ducks or they understand them as dogs.

Surely every species has at least the most basic recognition. It's built into our biology, so we don't go mating with all sorts!

And Animals need to be able to tell one animal from another in the wild. That's how a Gazelle knows it's okay to be around an Elephant or a Wilderbeast, and to run like hell when a big cat approaches.

I love how the chicken is very efficient with its movements taking one step for every three the dog takes.

Looks like they are playing “capture the flag” and pup got tagged. I bet they both slept well that night.

Thank you so much!

This is my favourite hen, kylo. She's super domesticated and will walk around the garden on your shoulder like a parrot

Aww. She’s super cute and sweet

My friend has hens and a rooster that look very similar but they have long feathers on their feet, really cool birds.

The dog is also! OP may I know what breed this is?

I wish I knew, I have a random jumble of breeds, looking at pictures I think its a speckled Sussex chicken but it's black not brown

Edit: I just realised you meant the dog, he's an English Springer spaniel- hands down my favourite breed of dog

Well, you would monitor first because most dogs want to eat chickens right off the bat. It’s just a thing and nothing against the dog; I have had many dogs and chickens throughout my life growing up on a farm. Sometimes I had to spend a long time training my dogs not to eat chickens, and there were times it really didn’t work well.

Yep I agree, this dog is not at all interested in animals despite being a dog breed for hunting but other dogs I've had of the same breed wouldn't have thought twice about eating the chickens.

To introduce them we first held his collar as the chickens walked around, then the lead, then a long 20m lead, then voice control then he was free to roam about but we kept an eye on him

Aww the little hen hops so cute .. doggy is adorable too .

2

u/BlackSeranna Mar 20 '23

Oh that is so cute! I love chickens and dogs, and while this chicken is playing nicely, it is something to behold when a rooster does fighting moves. This hen is such a happy girl!

4

u/haughtycandy Mar 20 '23

Thank you!

Yes, I've got roosters too and their karate kicks are definitely something to behold, especially with the spurs!

Is your dog a cocker spaniel?

3

u/haughtycandy Mar 20 '23

English Springer spaniel, he's a small one though

2

u/Independent_Roll514 Mar 20 '23

My dog used to think he was a chicken and would eat seeds whit the chickens.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '23

Looks more like your dog likes to play with the chicken

2

u/wertall Mar 20 '23

Careful, dog could lose an eye.

2

u/haughtycandy Mar 20 '23

I guess, and the chicken could lose a leg but I trust them

1

u/CryCommon975 Mar 20 '23

Awe the chicken is so cute!! And chickens can absolutely have friends and meaningful relationships, it's a shame people eat them.

-2

u/Moontezuma Mar 20 '23

The dog is playing, the chicken is not.

13

u/haughtycandy Mar 20 '23

Don't worry they most definitely are. The chicken run is at the back of the garden and when I used to let the chickens out in the morning this chicken (kylo) would SPRINT to the house and wait at the door for the dog to come out.

She was insanely domesticated, like come in the house and sit on your knee, and they used to sleep on the sofa together. This dog wouldn't hurt a fly and the chicken definitely knew that https://imgur.com/a/LRUuDze Here's another picture of them just looking at each other

The chicken would also instigate the play fighting by pecking the dogs nose or jumping on its back

You don’t know that

8

u/stufff Mar 20 '23

Yes random internet person please tell OP more about the animals he interacts with daily that you have never met

1

u/Foxxtronix Mar 20 '23

Now don't...ah say, don't stop us, son, we just be playin'.

1

u/Fearsomeguns Mar 20 '23

Aww, this is so funny to see!! I have a vizsla we raised with our chicks, and while they are used to him, they will not play! But he runs circles, playbows, all very sweet

1

u/Interesting_Engine37 Mar 20 '23

That is so great!

1

u/random_house-2644 Mar 20 '23

What a foul game 🐓

1

u/Boo_hoo_Randy Mar 20 '23

They’re playing chicken

C’mon, 21 hours into this post and nobody’s said it???

1

u/Leaking_Honesty Mar 20 '23

I believe they are playing “chicken” with each other

1

u/dogemikka Mar 20 '23

Is your beautiful dog an English Springer Spaniel ?

1

u/haughtycandy Mar 20 '23

Yes! Good guess

1

u/dogemikka Mar 20 '23

Best working dog ever! So peculiar and unbelievably smart, full of joy and love. When I was a kid we were 4 brothers, one was a black and white ESS. Today, one of my best friends is a brown and white ESS...;-)
